My Word about The Word – by Baz (Site Admin)

This site is about the Channel Four television show “The Word” which is remembered by many as a terrible show that had people eating shit sandwiches but had on great bands like Oasis, Nirvana,  Faith no More, Sepultura, The Charlatans and many more – but there was a lot more to it than that.

I flick through the television on a Friday night in 2010 and what do I see – nothing but crap.

The Word was the only program that broke the mould and it was “event” television – people even used to leave the pub twenty minutes early to get home to see it, who can honestly say there’s anything worth doing that for now (except for the free views of the porn channels at midnight) 

These days we’ve all got Sky+HD or V+ or Get Your Granny to Tape It+ so that isn’t really so much of a big deal now – we’d just record it, but WHAT the hell is there on now on a Friday night to record?  In my opinion The Word could have still been on now.  The show reinvented itself every year with new sets, new music and format tweaks that kept it fresh and exciting to watch – and was presented by one of the best people it could have been – Terry Christian.  I don’t want to sound like I’m brown-nosing him but I have a lot of respect for the guy and I know for a FACT that many of us do (Otherwise how would he have been so close to winning Big Brother last year?)

Speaking of Big Brother I reckon (and this is my own opinion) they probably “engineered” the voting because how could the Channel ever fucking admit how popular Terry actually is after having shat on him  from a great height back in the 90’s by axing their most popular show on a whim –because some tosser journalists decided to say it was “disgusting” and “crap” – as I say it’s just my own opinion.

Terry Christian should have been held in the highest regard by Channel Four and by now should have been on the same status as Jonathon Ross (Who’s brother Paul –Most Haunted- Ross was the series editor for The Word at one time)  The Channel got scared of the show’s success – plain and simple.  They were scared how popular Terry was at the time and obviously scared of pulling in 4.5 Million viewers every Friday night.

I think it is a travesty that “The Word” was axed, and at the time I really thought it would have been back – but it never has been.  It’s one of the few shows that hasn’t even been repeated in its entirety – however, they did make a really good job about 11 years ago of putting together the best bits of The Word which they then shunted around the schedules every week and even took off the air three weeks early, a move which at the time angered the public and forced the Channel to show the remainder of the “Best of” series six months later.  They couldn’t even be arsed to treat that with any dignity.

I think it was the end of the second series that I first discovered “The Word” and it’s greatness – I remember it was really popular amongst the lads at school and some of the lucky buggers even had video recorders to tape it – I never.

In our house we had a little black-and-white telly which was in the shape of a cube (It was made by Philips) and it had a built in radio and cassette deck and you could record audio from the TV onto a cassette.  Every Friday night I used to watch “The Word” and record it onto cassette and listen to it during the week!

My parents must have seen how pathetic I was recording a TV show onto a C90 tape and when i was 16 for Christmas they got me a video recorder – it was a top-loader and the whole house shook when you ejected the tape but it was a bloody good machine and that’s what I used to record The Word (and other stuff by the way – i wasn’t THAT obsessed with it)  It’s that massive VHS recorder that is to thank now for the collection of episodes I’ve cherished for the last 17 years – although now I’ve converted them to DVD.
